Coatings and Lacquers

Functional coatings or lacquers are a common feature to protect surfaces or to provide them with extra functions. The Fraunhofer ISC has many years of experience in the development of inorganic and hybrid materials and in optimizing coating procedures. The Institute works with economically friendly materials in compliance with the REACH regulations.

Current R&D priorities

  • Scratch resistant plastic coatings
  • Barrier coatings for plastic packaging
  • Biodegradable barrier coatings for packaging (bioORMOCER®)
  • Dust-repellent and anti-reflective coatings as well as colored coatings for glass
  • Corrosion protection for metal surfaces and glass
  • Sensor layers and catalytically active coatings
  • Easy-to-clean-, anti-fingerprint- and anti-graffiti coatings for plastic materials
  • Hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings
  • Textile and leather finishing coatings (e.g. antimicrobial, antistatic, flame-retarding, non-fade, abrasion resistant) – InnoSolTEX®
  • Active electrochromic coatings for shading solutions with glass and plastic materials
  • Photocatalytically active coatings for nanoparticles
  • Core-shell protection coatings for battery electrodes
  • Optical coatings for light management (light scattering layers, optical absorption layers)

Our competencies

  • Multifunctional coatings from tunable material systems of modular design
  • Rich experience in the development of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers (ORMOCER®s) with multifunctional property profiles for use on all kinds of substrates, including glass, plastic, texile, leather and metal materials
  • Energy and cost efficient coating procedures for prototypes, small batches and up to pilot scale for large areas (sol-gel route, roll-to-roll coating)
  • State-of-the-art equipment for materials development and optimization

Our services to customers

  • Development or adaptation of coatings to match the target substrate, specification and application, respective coating procedures
  • Surface and coating analysis and characterization
  • Test coatings
  • Pilot-scale coating of flexible and solid substrates
  • Development of new production and processing techniques
