Ceramic Materials – Technical ceramics for high temperature applications

Ceramic materials offer high temperature stability and good resistance in chemically aggressive environments. One of the core R&D areas of the Fraunhofer ISC and the attached Fraunhofer Center for High Temperature Materials and Design HTL are oxide and non-oxide specialty ceramics and ceramic composites.

Current R&D priorities

  • Ceramic coating materials
  • Ceramic reinforcement fibers
  • Ceramic slurry and matrix materials for Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC)
  • Fiber composite ceramics
  • Metal-ceramic composites

Our competencies

The Fraunhofer ISC and its Center HTL have a number of processing and manufacturing methods available for ceramic materials:

  • Sol-gel synthesis of precursors
  • Manufacturing and coating of fibers
  • Modification of fiber properties and fiber surfaces
  • Textile fiber processing
  • Prepreg production for ceramic fiber composites
  • Structure / property relationship, FE simulation
  • Textile processing techniques, further processing to CMC components
  • 3D printing of ceramics and metal ceramic composites
  • Standard measuring procedures for ceramic masses, slurries, and granules
  • Development of thermooptic measuring tools (TOM) for the optimization of thermal processes

Our services to customers

  • Materials design
  • Components design
  • Manufacturing and processing of complex ceramic bodies, incl. contract firing
  • Implementation in production processes
  • Analysis and optimization of industrial thermal processes in terms of energy and resource efficiency
