There is a close connection between basic research at universities and application-oriented R&D as conducted at Fraunhofer institutes, i.e. the institutionalized teaching and research activities of Fraunhofer scientists at nearby universities.

The director of the Fraunhofer ISC, Professor Dr. Gerhard Sextl, holds the "Chair for Chemical Technology of Materials Synthesis" at the Julius-Maximilians-University in Würzburg. A cooperation between the Fraunhofer ISC and the Würzburg University and a partnership with the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences, gave rise to the engineering course "Technology of Functional Materials".

The close connection is also reflected in the Fraunhofer ISC offer to young academics of materials science: students and graduates can participate in R&D projects, in the form of complete study-related internships or to work on bachelor/master or doctoral theses.
