There is a close connection between basic university research and application-oriented research, as conducted at Fraunhofer Institutes: The institutionalized teaching and research activities of Fraunhofer scientists at neighboring universities. The previous head of the institute, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Sextl, held the chair of "Chemical Technology of Materials Synthesis" at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and retired on April 1, 2024. The appointment process for his successor is still ongoing.
The close connection is also reflected in the Fraunhofer ISC offer to young academics of materials science: students and graduates can participate in R&D projects, in the form of complete study-related internships or to work on bachelor/master or doctoral theses.
