On May 21, 2019, the first LABVOLUTION AWARDS were presented in Hannover. Together with BioRegio STERN, Goldfuß engineering, Biametrics and BioTeSys, the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC has reached 3rd place for their project APRONA. They were honored for the development of a two-armed robotic system that enables the automated production of nanoparticles. The first robotic prototype facility was presented at the LABVOLUTION.

The LABVOLUTION AWARD is aimed at users from the laboratory world and is awarded for sustainable work and process improvements in the laboratory. An independent jury has decided that Forschungszentrum Jülich should take home the award 2019. Apart from Jülich the Interlabor Belp (2nd place) and the APRONA partners (3rd place) were also nominated.

As the manufacturing of nanoparticles for medical applications is currently characterized by many elaborate and manual steps, project APRONA focused on the automated production of such particles using a two-arm robotic system. This enables to produce nanoparticle systems with tightly defined specifications and short development cycles. This also paves the way for tailor-made products that are used in individualized diagnostics and therapy.
