An important goal of material-oriented research in the paper industry is to develop 100 % bio-based paper products that can be recycled several times in the sense of a circular economy. The focus is on functional chemicals such as dry and wet strength agents, binders and adhesives, sizing agents, barrier coatings, printing inks and optical brighteners, and on process chemicals such as retention agents, fixing agents, dispersants and defoamers. These substances have so far been based predominantly on fossil raw materials and thus endanger the role of paper as a sustainable material in the long term.

Dr. Ferdinand Somorowsky will present the research field of coating technology in his lecture "Hybrid materials - a unique class of materials for surface finishing and functionalization" on December 6, 2022 at 3:45 p.m. and introduce the ORMOCER^® and bioORMOCER^® coatings developed at Fraunhofer ISC as new multifunctional and sustainable materials.
