Ultrasound Diagnostics for Long-Lasting Batteries

Fraunhofer ISC in Würzburg is developing ultrasound diagnostic methods for the non-destructive testing of lithium-ion battery cells. The aim is to analyze material conditions and aging processes, thereby creating the foundation for improved lifetime predictions. The method enables a more reliable assessment of the cell's state of charge and state of health during operation. At the same time, mechanical diagnostics opens up potential for optimized production processes, longer-lasting and more sustainable batteries, and, in the future, new approaches to battery recycling.
